Comparison

Which character, the seafarer or the wanderer, has lost the most? Explain your choice.

  1. The seafarer has gone to sea willingly, and so the sacrifices he has made, while grievous, are nevertheless self-incurred. In contrast, the wanderer has been forcibly removed from all that he knows and has no chance to ever reclaim it. That being the case, the wanderer's loss is much deeper and greater than the seafarer's - the latter, were he to give up his travels, could in time create a new existence for himself. As previously established, the wanderer cannot.

  2. The wanderer lost the most because he was not at sea by choose but the the Seafarer choose to be out there. The wandered lost the most because when he came back from sea he was literally lost at mind. He had nothing to hold on to, he had to remind himself that God promises to be there in times of hardship. Where as the Seafarer had a stronger faith or reliance in God and worrier a lit less even though both of them were lonely.

  3. The wanderer no doubt has lost the most. Friendshio is irreplaceable of course, but the seafarer went to sea willingly knowing what was at stake and what the possibilities were. The wanderer however, had no warnings or anything. He was basically desertted. Now he is all alone in the world. he has no relatives or friends. He is hopeless.

  4. As all the characters have suffered insurmountable losses. The character that has lost the most is the Wife. The wife has lost the most for various reasons. For one she has lost any and all communication with her family. In addition to that having her husband leave her in a state of unhappiness. Not having any compassion or love from someone gives that person the feeling of loneliness, Heartache, hate and several other malicious feelings.

  5. Between the Seafarer and the Wanderer, the Wanderer lost the most because he was extracted from what he knew as his life. The Seafarer chose the course that his life would take. Both are lives of hardship and lonliness, but the wanderer bears feelings of trauma and life being unfair on top of the hopelessness, helplessness and self-loathing.

  6. While the Seafarer chose, willingly, to go to sea and leave his earthly wares behind, the Wanderer had his life ripped from his hands, with seemingly no chance to retrieve it. The forced loss and subsequent exile from society is a much greater loss than just choosing to leave, because of the fact that, if the Seafarer wants to return, his life is still waiting for him. In light of this, the Wanderer's loss is greater.

  7. The wanderer has lost the most between him and the seafarer. The wanderer has lost hope of life. It is true that both have lost the comfort of their family but the wanderer has lost his hope. All that is going through his head is death. The death of his kin, lord, and fellow soldiers. Also he is thinking about the harshness of the reality of the end of mankind, death. He is just alone in the world with only negative memories to think about. He is still in emotional pain while he wanders the ocean.

  8. The reader can infer that the person in "The Wanderer" lost the most because the person has give in up on life and now doesn't care about anything. The person in "The Seafarer" willingly went to the sea, if the he didn't want to go off to sea then he didn't have to go, and he would have stayed home with his wife. Unlike him, the wanderer can't undo his thoughts and what has happened previously.

  9. Surely the Wanderer's loss is greater. His living conditions are beyond his own control and his social circumstances are hopeless. Contrastingly, the seafarer determines his own living conditions and fate. He has the option to begin again; the same is not presented to the wanderer.

  10. The wanderer has lost the most because he was the only one who's lost wasn't by his own doing. The wife lost her husband and everyone she knows because she was exiled for her own actions, while the seafarer willingly sacrificed everything he had to live his life at sea because even though the sea is a harsh place to be, he loves what he does. The wanderer had everything and everyone he loved taken from him and was forced to live out at sea and reminisce about the good times he shared with his friends and family, and mourn over the loss of them.

  11. In the "The Seafarer" the seafarer decided that he wanted to go out to sea. Even though it might have brought him grief and turmoil, He Made the choice of leaving. In contrast, the wanderer in "The Wanderer", was stripped away from his home. His lifes choice was not his own. Therefore, the wanderer is the one that is suffering more turmoil.

  13. Clearly the the Wanderer has suffered the biggest lost. The Seafarer went out to the sea through his own choice, while the Wanderer on the other hand did not have a choice. The Wanderer had no chance of regaining his life back.To be forcibly taken away from your family and put out in the sea is heart breaking.
