Comparison

Are the same personal qualities valued today as during the Medieval Period and what proof supports this?

  1. One of the largest qualities valued today as in the time of the Exeter is being able to socialise with our fellow man. When one looks at all three of the poems from the Exeter: "The Seafarer", "The Wanderer", and "The Wife's Lament," the most common form of loss that each character faces is the lost being able to befriend his fellow man. What I mean is that the seafarer must endure the seas alone, the wanderer must wander, alone, and the wife's greatest hardship is that her husband left to be alone. As civilization has shown us, when people work with other people, great things can happen much faster and with greater success. The greatest monuments on earth were not built by single men, but by people numbering in the hundreds and thousands. In short, the one quality that was expressed as being lost in all three of the poems is very much still valued in today's world.

  2. Yes, the same personal qualities are valued today as during the Medievil period, the biggest one being 'faith in God', and the proof that supports this unfortunately is that religion is commercialized. Man is first prompted and encouraged to buy into a religion, whether it be by a sad story he read/heard, or a movie he saw, or a radio station he tuned into, or an eye-catching billboard he passed, or a tv program he switched to. It is no longer found and decided by the pure goodness with the man to believe in a god, but he now learns from example, or is pressured to have a faith in fear of not being socially accepted. Nevertheless, he is choosing to have faith, therefore he will strive to live his life in accordance.

  3. The same personal qualities are still valued in today's society as it was in Medieval period. One quality that is portrait in all three poems are the values of family. Family has and always will be an important factor in a persons happiness. In all three poems, the characters are in despair because they do not have their family with them at the time. They show that kin is an important part of society in the Medieval period. Today it still remain the same. As the saying goes, "no man is an island", they prove that loneliness brings on sadness. Another quality that is portrait is the believe in God. In the poems they speak of God and keep him near to their heart to help them. In today's society religion and having God is a very important part in every day lives for people.

  4. Yes the same personal qualities are valued, just look at "The Wife's Lament" and "The Wanderer". In "The Wife's Lament" she's basically alone now because her husband's friends said she was no good and she cheated on him when he was away. The same thing happens in today's world when it comes to relationships; a man can be with a lady and everything can be going good until the 'power of suggestion' and 'rumors' come into play by the man's friends. In "The Wanderer" the man has lost everything and now it's like he can't live on. In today's world when a person has so many demons (bad thoughts replaying over and over in their heads) in their head they just don't talk about it and hope that it will go away on its own.

  5. Yes, the same personal qualities valued today as during the Medieval Period. In the "Wife's Lament" she is full of grief because her husband has left her, and doesn't know, if he'll ever return. The same thing still occurs today. A wife, daughter, or mother still laments over their loved one, because they don't really know if they'll be returning.

Men can have a wife and everything would be just joyous, but as soon as rumors and insecurities step in it causes the separation. In "The wanderer" the man has lost everything in such a short time. In todays society, especially in this economy, people loose everything in a matter of minutes. Therefore, these things can happen in todays soceity.

  7. One might believe so. People yell at each other for being discourteous (road rage). Others talk about those who have no decorum (people talking loudly on cell phones in restaurants). Some have a special place in their heart for chivalry (guys who open doors for ladies).
